Evangelicals (Saturday, November 21st) @ Beachland Ballroom (in the Tavern)
Upon first listen to this indie psychedelic-pop band's music, one might be floored to learn that they hail from Oklahoma (much like The Flaming Lips, who The Evangelicals are often compared with). This four-piece offers an eclectic mix of B-movie monster rock that blends catchy melodies with aggressive tempos. That formula has made them one of the more memorable live acts. Not music for sunny weather, the band's dark, haunting harmonies will perfectly match the landscape of Cleveland in November. Evidently, they must enjoy our weather (and/or The Beachland), as this will be their second stop this fall. Given that they're swinging through town so close to the holidays, hopefully they'll feel inclined to perform their cheery Christmas carol, "The Last Christmas on Earth." The Evangelicals are on tour with fellow psychedelic melody makers, Holiday Shores. www.myspace.com/evangelicals and www.beachlandballroom.com.
Social Studies (Sunday, November 8th) The Get Up! Presents @ The B-side Lounge
Their music could be described as catchy and energetic twee-pop that is slightly rough around the edges with a pleasant aftertaste; vocally reminiscent of a more rockin' Au Revoir Simone and instrumentally similar to a more subdued Tilly & the Wall. These purveyors of pop are sinister in their ability to craft a melody that will not be leaving you anytime soon. The band joins the likes of Nada Surf, Rogue Wave, Cody Chesnutt, and many other their indie-rock contemporaries, who have produced great work at the famed Tiny Telephones studio in San Francisco. www.myspace.com/socialstudies101 and www.thebsidelounge.com.
White Denim (Saturday, November 7th) @ The Grog Shop
There must be something in the water down in Austin, Texas, that spawns so many exceptional lead singers. From Brit Daniel of Spoon to Will Sheff of Okkervil River to Rhet Miller of Old '97s to White Denim's James Petralli, there seems to be no shortage of soulful vocalists in the Longhorn state. The White Denim trio possess a stripped down, straight out of the garage rawness that is layered with a thumping bass and toe-tapping, animalistic howl. Forget the Labor Day fashion rules: this White Denim is the perfect fit for getting down and spilling a few beers. White Denim tours with fellow Austinites, Brazos. http://whitedenimmusic.com and www.grogshop.gs.
