Warpaint is a quartet led by the angelic voice of Emily Kokal. Although hailing from Los Angeles, the group doesn't like being typecast as an "L.A. band." Ex-affiliates of notoriety include actress Shannyn Sossamon (director of the video for their hypnotic single, "Undertow") and guitarist John Klinghoffer (of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers). Their melodies possess elements of Cat Power, Smashing Pumpkins and Fleetwood Mac; a blending of shoegaze, folk and nostalgia. Warpaint showcases a post-feminism West Coast vibe driven by lively indie guitar that is reflectively poignant. Their sophomore effort, The Fool, was produced by Tom Biller (Beck, Liars, Jon Brion) and is definitely worth the trip down to Waterloo to pick up a copy at Music Saves.
