Sketchbook Cleveland is a twice-monthly feature by South Euclid writer and illustrator Karen Sandstrom. With sketchbook in hand, Sandstrom scouts Northeast Ohio to find its celebrated and hidden treasures, documenting them in her inimitable style.
In this sketch, Sandstrom captures a slice of life not often seen by most Clevelanders. At the William Patrick Day Early Childhood Center in Cleveland, dedicated mentors, including Sandstrom's daughter, seek to enrich the lives of children with cognitive and physical disabilities. It's a scene that's at once, as Sandstrom puts it, "weirdly heartbreaking and uplifting."
