Rapper Nicki Minaj has enjoyed some notable achievements in music since the release of her debut studio album Pink Friday in 2010. She became the first artist in history to have eight singles on the Billboard Hot 100 at the same time, and her second single, "Your Love," reached number one of the Billboard Hot Rap Songs chart, making Minaj the first female artist to top that chart unaccompanied since 2002.
Cleveland pride being what it is, fans of a local jewelry designer might like to think Minaj's success has something to do with her custom-designed pink microphone.
Katie Marks designed the pink Swarovski crystal-encrusted microphone that Minaj will use when brings her Pink Friday tour to Cleveland on July 26th with Britney Spears' Femme Fatale tour. The rapper and the pop star will perform at Quicken Loans Arena.
Marks, who lives in Lyndhurst, was contacted months ago to design the microphone for Minaj. She spent approximately 20 hours creating the one-of-a-kind design, which Minaj also used in her performance on Dancing With The Stars and at the Billboard Music Awards, both of which aired in May. "I created Nicki Minaj's Swarovski crystal-covered microphone in an elaborate mathematical grid," says Marks. "Every angle of the cone-shaped mic is symmetrical." The designer earned a bachelor's degree in art from The Ohio State University, and recently completed her studies at the Studio Arts Centers International in Florence, Italy. She previously spend a year in New York City as an accessory designer.
Marks has also designed a glittering Sidekick phone for Spears; other celebrity clients include Jennifer Lopez, who owns a Sony Cyber-shot camera customized by Marks, and Lindsay Lohan, for whom Marks created a one-of-a-kind Motorola Razr phone.
