In this edition of Sketchbook Cleveland, I introduce Spike Radway, a "Mac guru" from Highland Heights. He has a kind of wacky sense of fun that I admire. I attended the first of Spike's Halloween costume–making parties a couple years ago and didn't make a costume, just drew the other strange adults who did. This year, I decided to reprise the experience.
Spike's big thing is that Halloween used to be fun when we were kids, and a big part of the experience was coming up with ideas of our own, though for years I plead with my mother for a Morticia Addams costume. The astounding thing is that Radway invites all these adults to come and make costumes – and they do."Once somebody breaks the ice, most people jump in," says Radway. "It helps having kids around, because they haven't learned yet to be self-conscious about it."

Sketchbook Cleveland is a twice-monthly feature by South Euclid writer and illustrator Karen Sandstrom. With sketchbook in hand, Sandstrom scouts Northeast Ohio to find its celebrated and hidden treasures, documenting them in her inimitable style.
